The act of taking control of a territory, area, or position by military force. Also used figuratively for monopolizing a space.
敵に占領された。
It was occupied by the enemy.
戦後、日本は連合国に占領された。
After the war, Japan was occupied by the Allied forces.
子供たちがソファを占領していて座れない。
The kids have taken over the sofa and I can't sit down.
Also functions as a する verb (占領する). In modern Japanese, sometimes used humorously for 'taking over' a space (example 3).
