1.
to brew, to make (tea or coffee)
To prepare tea or coffee by pouring hot water over leaves or grounds. This kanji specifically refers to the process of brewing a beverage, as distinct from the general verb 入れる (to put in).
コーヒーを淹れる。
To brew coffee.
朝は必ず紅茶を淹れて飲む。
I always brew and drink black tea in the morning.
丁寧に淹れたお茶は香りが違う。

USAGE:
The kanji 淹 specifically means to brew by steeping or pouring hot water. In practice, お茶を入れる (using the simpler kanji) is also very common and accepted. Using 淹れる signals a more deliberate focus on the brewing process itself.
Applies to tea (緑茶, 紅茶, etc.) and coffee. Not used for other beverages.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- お茶を淹れる: to brew tea
- コーヒーを淹れる: to brew coffee
- 丁寧に淹れる: to brew carefully
- 淹れたて: freshly brewed
