An appeal to the highest court (Supreme Court) against a judgment of a lower court. In the Japanese legal system, this is the last stage of the appeals process.
被告(ひこく)は最高裁(さいこうさい)に上告(じょうこく)した。
The defendant appealed to the Supreme Court.
上告(じょうこく)が棄却(ききゃく)され、判決(はんけつ)が確定(かくてい)した。
The appeal was dismissed, and the verdict was finalized.
弁護団(べんごだん)は上告(じょうこく)の理由(りゆう)として憲法(けんぽう)違反(いはん)を主張(しゅちょう)したが、最高裁(さいこうさい)はこれを認(みと)めなかった。
The defense team argued a constitutional violation as grounds for the appeal, but the Supreme Court did not accept it.

USAGE NOTES:
In the Japanese three-tier court system, 上告(じょうこく) is the appeal from a High Court (高等裁判所(こうとうさいばんしょ)) to the Supreme Court (最高裁判所(さいこうさいばんしょ)). It is distinct from 控訴(こうそ), which is an appeal from a District Court to a High Court.
