An appeal to the highest court (Supreme Court) against a judgment of a lower court. In the Japanese legal system, this is the last stage of the appeals process.

弁護団は上告の理由として憲法違反を主張したが、最高裁はこれを認めなかった。
The defense team argued a constitutional violation as grounds for the appeal, but the Supreme Court did not accept it.
USAGE NOTES:
In the Japanese three-tier court system, 上告 is the appeal from a High Court (高等裁判所) to the Supreme Court (最高裁判所). It is distinct from 控訴, which is an appeal from a District Court to a High Court.
