A literary word meaning a large number or great quantity. More formal and poetic than たくさん.

Usage

A literary, elevated word. In everyday speech, たくさん or (おお) is used instead. 数多(あまた) appears in formal writing, literature, speeches, and news. Almost always modifies a noun with : 数多(あまた)作品(さくひん).

Note on reading

Also read as 数多(すうた) in some compounds, but the standalone adverbial use is always あまた.
