One of Japan's most prestigious literary awards, established in 1935 in honor of the writer Akutagawa Ryuunosuke. It is awarded biannually for the best work of serious literary fiction by a new or emerging author, published in a literary magazine.

The award ceremony is held twice a year, with winners announced in January and July. It is widely covered by the media and can launch an author's career.
