flush toilet
A toilet that uses water to flush waste into a sewage system. Distinguished from non-flush toilets (汲み取り式) that were common in rural Japan until recent decades.
In urban Japan today, nearly all toilets are 水洗トイレ, so the term is mainly used in contrast with non-flush alternatives, or when describing facilities at campsites, mountain huts, and older rural buildings.
