An on-site wastewater treatment system that processes household sewage before discharging it. Common in areas of Japan not connected to the public sewage system. Regulated under the Septic Tank Law (浄化槽法(じょうかそうほう)).

A compound of 浄化(じょうか) (purification) + 槽(そう) (tank, vat). In Japan, areas without municipal sewage infrastructure use 浄化槽(じょうかそう) to treat household wastewater on-site. Homeowners with a 浄化槽(じょうかそう) are legally required to have it inspected and cleaned regularly.

There are two types:

  • 単独(たんどく)浄化槽(じょうかそう): treats only toilet waste (older type)
  • 合併(がっぺい)浄化槽(じょうかそう): treats all household wastewater including kitchen and bath (modern standard)
