1.
septic tank, sewage treatment tank
An on-site wastewater treatment system that processes household sewage before discharging it. Common in areas of Japan not connected to the public sewage system. Regulated under the Septic Tank Law (浄化槽法).
Since this area has no sewage system, a septic tank needs to be installed.
A compound of 浄化 (purification) + 槽 (tank, vat). In Japan, areas without municipal sewage infrastructure use 浄化槽 to treat household wastewater on-site. Homeowners with a 浄化槽 are legally required to have it inspected and cleaned regularly.
There are two types:
- 単独浄化槽: treats only toilet waste (older type)
- 合併浄化槽: treats all household wastewater including kitchen and bath (modern standard)
Common collocations
- 浄化槽を設置する: to install a septic tank
- 浄化槽の清掃: septic tank cleaning
- 浄化槽の点検: septic tank inspection
- 浄化槽管理: septic tank maintenance
