One of the three main branches of the military alongside 海軍 (navy) and 空軍 (air force). In modern Japan, the equivalent is 陸上自衛隊 (Ground Self-Defense Force), since Japan's postwar constitution prohibits maintaining traditional armed forces. The term 陸軍 is still used when referring to other countries' armies or to the historical Imperial Japanese Army (大日本帝国陸軍).
