During World War II, the Japanese army and navy planned operations separately.

One of the three main branches of the military alongside 海軍(かいぐん) (navy) and 空軍(くうぐん) (air force). In modern Japan, the equivalent is 陸上自衛隊(りくじょうじえいたい) (Ground Self-Defense Force), since Japan's postwar constitution prohibits maintaining traditional armed forces. The term 陸軍(りくぐん) is still used when referring to other countries' armies or to the historical Imperial Japanese Army (大日本帝国陸軍(だいにっぽんていこくりくぐん)).
