A dark, viscous petroleum product used as fuel for ships, power plants, and industrial boilers. It is the residue left after lighter fractions like gasoline and diesel have been distilled from crude oil.
Composed of 重 (heavy) + 油 (oil). Called "heavy" because it is denser and more viscous than lighter petroleum products like gasoline (揮発油) or 軽油 (diesel). Classified into types A, B, and C based on viscosity.
