To be afflicted with a disease or long-term medical condition. More formal and literary than 病気になる, and usually implies a serious or prolonged illness.
長く患っている。
He has been ill for a long time.
父は心臓の病を患っていた。

After suffering a serious illness, I came to understand the importance of health.

NOTE: As a verb suffix, わずらう attaches to the masu-stem to mean "have trouble doing," as in 思い煩う (to fret) or 言い煩う (to struggle to say).
