こやけ

こやけ
noun
lingering glow (of sunset)
nature
1. lingering glow (of sunset); afterglow
The softer red glow that follows 夕焼(ゆうや)け in the western sky after the sun has set. Used mainly in the fixed pair 夕焼(ゆうや)けこやけ rather than on its own.
The sunset and afterglow are beautiful.
We all sang the children's song "Yūyake Koyake" together.
Looking up at the glowing evening sky, the children headed home.

Almost never used alone — it appears as the second half of 夕焼(ゆうや)こやけ, where it functions partly as a sound-pattern echo of 夕焼(ゆうや). Famous from the children's song "夕焼(ゆうや)こやけ," which plays from public-address systems in many Japanese neighborhoods at 5 p.m. to signal that children should head home.
