To go back to one's home, country, or original location. The destination is typically a place one belongs to or comes from.

来年(らいねん)(くに)(かえ)ります。
I will return to my country next year.
もう(かえ)りたいです
I want to go home now.
I'll go home right after work ends.
The trains had stopped, so I went home by taxi.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: X(かえ)る (return to X).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. (かえ)っている = 'has returned (and is there now).'

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • (いえ)(かえ)る (go home)
  • (くに)(かえ)る (return to one's country)
  • (かえ)りなさい (welcome home - greeting)
  • (かえ)り (return trip - noun)

Godan verb despite ending in る. Different from (もど) (return to previous state) and ()える (to change - ichidan).
