Kokugikan; national sumo arena
An arena built for sumo wrestling. By default refers to the 両国国技館 in Tokyo, the main venue for grand sumo tournaments in eastern Japan.
国技館で相撲を見た。
I watched sumo at the Kokugikan.
両国国技館の席を予約した。
I reserved a seat at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan.
国技館の近くにはちゃんこ鍋屋がたくさんある。
There are lots of chanko-nabe restaurants near the Kokugikan.
Literally "national-sport hall," from 国技 (national sport) + 館 (hall). The current arena in Ryōgoku opened in 1985 and hosts three of the six annual sumo tournaments.
