There is a custom of refraining from celebratory events until the mourning period ends.
喪に服す (to be in mourning) is the most common set phrase. The mourning period is called 喪中.

- 喪主: chief mourner
- 喪が明ける: for the mourning period to end
NOTE:
喪中 is written on postcards (喪中はがき) sent to notify people that the sender will not be sending New Year's greeting cards.
