The period of grief and abstention from celebrations following the death of a family member or close relative. Traditionally lasting 49 days in Buddhism.
喪(も)に服(ふく)す。
To observe mourning.
祖父(そふ)が亡(な)くなり、喪(も)に服(ふく)している。
My grandfather passed away and I am in mourning.
喪(も)が明(あ)けるまでは祝(いわ)い事(ごと)を控(ひか)える習慣(しゅうかん)がある。
There is a custom of refraining from celebratory events until the mourning period ends.

喪(も)に服(ふく)す (to be in mourning) is the most common set phrase. The mourning period is called 喪中(もちゅう).
