The whole of a person's mental and physical energy, thought of as something poured into a long undertaking. Used almost exclusively in the set phrase 心血(しんけつ)を注(そそ)ぐ.
研究(けんきゅう)に心血(しんけつ)を注(そそ)いだ。
He poured his heart and soul into his research.

Usage

Almost never used alone. The phrase 心血(しんけつ)を注(そそ)ぐ takes に for the object of the effort (作品(さくひん)に心血(しんけつ)を注(そそ)ぐ), and fits work carried on over years rather than a single burst of effort. Written and somewhat elevated in tone.
