Ground that an army occupies and defends, together with the trenches, emplacements, and camp built on it. In everyday speech it is also used jokingly for territory someone has staked out.

It is dangerous to approach the enemy's position.

From 陣(じん) (military camp, battle formation) plus 地(ち) (ground). The literal military sense is the core one; the playful "my patch" use is common in family and school talk.
