2. to obey, to observe
To follow rules or promises.
ルールを守(まも)る。
To obey the rules.
約束(やくそく)の時間(じかん)をきちんと守(まも)る人(ひと)は信頼(しんらい)される。
People who strictly keep to their scheduled times are trusted.
交通(こうつう)ルールを守(まも)らないと、事故(じこ)を起(お)こす危険(きけん)がある。
If you don't follow traffic rules, there's a risk of causing an accident.

守(まも)る has two main meanings: to protect and to follow/obey.
