A person's home viewed as legally protected private premises. It is a legal and journalistic term that appears almost exclusively in fixed compounds, above all 家宅捜索(かたくそうさく) (a police search of a residence).

家宅(かたく)捜索(そうさく)が行(おこな)われた。

A search of the residence was carried out.

警察(けいさつ)は容疑者(ようぎしゃ)の家宅(かたく)を調(しら)べた。

The police searched the suspect's residence.

令状(れいじょう)なしに家宅(かたく)に立(た)ち入(い)ることは法律(ほうりつ)で禁(きん)じられている。

Entering a private residence without a warrant is prohibited by law.

Do not use 家宅(かたく) for an ordinary "house" in conversation — say 家(いえ) or 住宅(じゅうたく). 家宅(かたく) belongs to legal register and is heard mainly on the news.
