Sakurajima, the volcano in Kagoshima Bay
An active volcano in Kagoshima Bay in southern Kyushu, facing Kagoshima city across the water. It erupts small plumes of ash many times a year, and ash falling on the city is part of daily life; the volcano is the symbol of Kagoshima.
Common expressions
- 桜島大根: Sakurajima radish, a giant round variety grown in the volcanic soil
- 克灰袋: the yellow bags Kagoshima residents use to collect volcanic ash for pickup
- 桜島フェリー: the ferry linking the volcano to the city, running around the clock
Cultural note
Despite its name, Sakurajima is no longer an island: the great eruption of 1914 poured out so much lava that it joined it to the Ōsumi Peninsula.
