A castle in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, with a white-walled main keep that survives from the early 1600s. A National Treasure and, since 1993, one of Japan's first World Heritage Sites.

姫路城(ひめじじょう)は白(しろ)くて美(うつく)しい。

Himeji Castle is a rare castle whose Edo-period keep still stands today.

Japan's best-known castle. Many castle keeps, such as that of 大阪城(おおさかじょう), are modern concrete reconstructions; 姫路城(ひめじじょう) is an original wooden keep, which is why it is so often held up as the model Japanese castle.
