1.
end of (a month, year, or other period)
Attached to a word for a period of time to mean its last part: the end of the month, the end of the year, the end of the term. Mostly written and businesslike.
Common collocations

- 年末: end of the year
- 週末: weekend
- 期末: end of a term (期末テスト, end-of-term exams)
- 年度末: end of the fiscal year (March in Japan)

Usage
With a named month, 末 follows the number directly: 三月末, 八月末. In speech, the same idea is often said as 三月の終わり.
Watch out
Do not confuse with 末 (end, as a standalone noun: 長い旅の末, 考えた末に, "after much thought"). The suffix まつ attaches only to time words.
