二月(にがつ)

二月(にがつ) is February, the second and shortest month of the year.

Cultural note

• 節分(せつぶん) (usually February 3, the day before the old start of spring): beans are thrown to drive out demons
• バレンタインデー (February 14): Valentine's Day, when women give chocolate to men; men reciprocate on ホワイトデー (White Day, March 14)

Usage

• A length of time is counted with 〜ヶ月(げつ): 二(に)ヶ月(げつ) (two months), not 二月(にがつ).
• February usually has 28 days, or 29 in a 閏年(うるうどし) (leap year).
