An optical phenomenon where light bends through layers of air at different temperatures, creating the appearance of distant objects being displaced or inverted, or the illusion of water in deserts.

KANJI ORIGIN:
- 蜃 (giant clam) + 気 (vapor) + 楼 (tower)
- Ancient Chinese believed giant clams breathed out vapor that formed phantom towers
- This mythology gave the phenomenon its name
TYPES:
- 上位蜃気楼 (superior mirage - objects appear elevated)
- 下位蜃気楼 (inferior mirage - objects appear below actual position)
- 逃げ水 (road mirage - appearance of water on hot roads)
FAMOUS VIEWING SPOTS IN JAPAN:
- 富山県魚津市 (Uozu, Toyama) - most famous
- Spring (April-May) is best viewing season
- 蜃気楼ロード (Mirage Road) is a designated viewing area
