1.
electronic money; e-money; digital payment method
Digital currency or payment systems that allow transactions without physical cash. Includes prepaid IC cards, mobile payment apps, and other cashless payment methods.
Forms
電子 (electronic) + マネー (money).
What IT covers
Prepaid transport IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA), retailer cards (nanaco, WAON), and smartphone payment apps (PayPay, LINE Pay, 楽天ペイ). Transport cards are accepted in convenience stores and vending machines as well as at ticket gates, so in ordinary conversation 電子マネー usually means tapping a card or phone at a till rather than an online transfer.
Common collocations
- 電子マネーで払う — to pay with e-money
- 電子マネーにチャージする — to top up e-money
- 電子マネー対応 — accepts e-money (the wording on shop signs)
