A compound of the English loanword キャッシュレス (cashless) and the Japanese word 決済 (payment, settlement). The term has become extremely common in Japan since the late 2010s as the government promoted digital payment adoption.
Japan was historically a cash-heavy society, but キャッシュレス決済 has spread rapidly through services like PayPay, Suica/PASMO, LINE Pay, and d-払い. Many stores now display signs indicating which cashless methods they accept.
