Types of notes

Japanese names note values by the fraction they occupy of a whole note, so they are transparent once the pattern is clear — unlike the English names, which a learner has to memorise separately.

  • 全(ぜん)音符(おんぷ): whole note (semibreve)
  • 二分(にぶん)音符(おんぷ): half note (minim)
  • 四分(しぶん)音符(おんぷ): quarter note (crotchet)
  • 八分(はちぶん)音符(おんぷ): eighth note (quaver)
  • 十六分(じゅうろくぶん)音符(おんぷ): sixteenth note (semiquaver)
