musical note
A symbol in musical notation that represents the pitch and duration of a sound. Also refers to the sound itself that the symbol represents.
Types of notes
Japanese names note values by the fraction they occupy of a whole note, so they are transparent once the pattern is clear — unlike the English names, which a learner has to memorise separately.
- 全音符: whole note (semibreve)
- 二分音符: half note (minim)
- 四分音符: quarter note (crotchet)
- 八分音符: eighth note (quaver)
- 十六分音符: sixteenth note (semiquaver)
