sense; taste; flair
1. sense; taste; flair
A natural ability to judge what is good, stylish, or appropriate in a particular area. Often used about fashion, design, humor, or artistic ability.

センス is a loanword from English "sense" but is used more narrowly in Japanese, primarily referring to aesthetic taste or natural flair.

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

  • センスがいい: to have good taste/sense
  • センスが(わる)い: to have bad taste
  • ファッションセンス: fashion sense
  • ユーモアのセンス: sense of humor
  • センスを(みが)く: to refine one's sense/taste

Note: Unlike English "sense" (which broadly covers the five senses, common sense, etc.), Japanese センス mainly means aesthetic taste or flair. For "common sense," use 常識(じょうしき). For the five senses, use 感覚(かんかく).
