1.
size, magnitude, dimensions
The physical size or scale of something. Formed from the adjective 大きい by replacing い with さ.
この箱の大きさはどのくらいですか。
How big is this box?
りんごの大きさがそれぞれ違う。
The apples are each a different size.
靴の大きさが合わなくて、足が痛い。
The shoe size doesn't fit, so my feet hurt.
大きさ means "size" or "magnitude" — the extent of how big something is.
FORMATION:
Formed with the ~さ suffix that converts い-adjectives into nouns expressing degree:
- 大きい → 大きさ (size)
- 高い → 高さ (height)
- 長い → 長さ (length)
- 広い → 広さ (spaciousness)
- 小さい → 小ささ (smallness)
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 大きさが違う: to differ in size
- 大きさが同じ: to be the same size
- 大きさを測る: to measure the size
- 大きさを比べる: to compare sizes
USAGE:
Unlike English "size" which can also refer to clothing sizes (S/M/L), 大きさ primarily refers to physical dimensions. For clothing sizes, サイズ is more common: このサイズはありますか (Do you have this size?).
