(おお)きさ

おおきさ
noun
size, magnitude
1. size, magnitude, dimensions
The physical size or scale of something. Formed from the adjective 大きい by replacing い with さ.
この(はこ)(おお)きさはどのくらいですか。
How big is this box?
りんごの(おお)きさがそれぞれ(ちが)う。
The apples are each a different size.
(くつ)(おお)きさが()わなくて、(あし)(いた)い。
The shoe size doesn't fit, so my feet hurt.

(おお)きさ means "size" or "magnitude" — the extent of how big something is.

FORMATION:

Formed with the ~さ suffix that converts い-adjectives into nouns expressing degree:

  • (おお)きい → (おお)きさ (size)
  • (たか)い → (たか)さ (height)
  • (なが)い → (なが)さ (length)
  • (ひろ)い → (ひろ)さ (spaciousness)
  • (ちい)さい → (ちい)ささ (smallness)

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • (おお)きさが(ちが)う: to differ in size
  • (おお)きさが(おな)じ: to be the same size
  • (おお)きさを(はか)る: to measure the size
  • (おお)きさを(くら)べる: to compare sizes

USAGE:
Unlike English "size" which can also refer to clothing sizes (S/M/L), (おお)きさ primarily refers to physical dimensions. For clothing sizes, サイズ is more common: このサイズはありますか (Do you have this size?).
