1.
very popular, hugely popular
Describes something or someone that enjoys enormous popularity. Combines the intensifier 大 (great, big) with 人気 (popularity). Used for trends, products, celebrities, and anything enjoying widespread appeal.
この映画は大人気だ。
This movie is hugely popular.
新商品が若者に大人気だそうだ。
I hear the new product is very popular with young people.
あの歌手は海外でも大人気で、来月の公演はすぐに売り切れた。

READING CAUTION:
Do not confuse 大人気 (very popular) with 大人気 (maturity, adult composure), which is a completely different word. The reading だいにんき means "extremely popular," while おとなげ means "maturity" and is most often seen in the negative form 大人気ない (childish, immature).
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 大人気の商品: hugely popular product
- 大人気の番組: hit TV program
- 子供に大人気: hugely popular with children
- 大人気を博す: to win great popularity
USAGE:
Functions as both a noun and a na-adjective. As a modifier, it takes の: 大人気の店 (a hugely popular shop). Can also be used predicatively with だ: この店は大人気だ.
