1.
local specialty product, regional specialty
A product that is characteristic of or uniquely associated with a particular region or area. Often refers to food items, crafts, or agricultural products that a region is famous for.
Usage
A common word in tourism, gift-giving, and regional promotion. Every prefecture and city in Japan actively promotes its 特産品. The shorter form 特産 (local product) is also used, especially as a prefix: 特産物 (specialty goods).
Cultural note
Buying 特産品 as souvenirs (お土産) when traveling is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. Department stores regularly hold 物産展 (regional product fairs) featuring specialties from different prefectures.
