USAGE:
A common word in tourism, gift-giving, and regional promotion. Every prefecture and city in Japan actively promotes its 特産品. The shorter form 特産 (local product) is also used, especially as a prefix: 特産物 (specialty goods).
CULTURAL NOTE:
Buying 特産品 as souvenirs (お土産) when traveling is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. Department stores regularly hold 物産展 (regional product fairs) featuring specialties from different prefectures.
