A person who gathers news, conducts interviews, and writes articles for newspapers, magazines, or broadcast media. The standard word for a working journalist in Japanese.
Usage
記者 is the most general term for a reporter or journalist. It is a homophone of 汽車 (steam train), which has a completely different meaning. The compound 記者会見 (press conference) is extremely common in news. Types of 記者 include 新聞記者 (newspaper reporter), 特派記者 (correspondent), and フリー記者 (freelance journalist).
