A formal meeting where a public figure addresses reporters and answers questions. The most common usage in modern Japanese.
記者(きしゃ)会見(かいけん)を開(ひら)く。
To hold a press conference.
社長(しゃちょう)が緊急(きんきゅう)会見(かいけん)を行(おこな)った。
The company president held an emergency press conference.
引退(いんたい)会見(かいけん)で涙(なみだ)を見(み)せた。
He showed tears at the retirement press conference.

A formal meeting between important persons, such as heads of state or dignitaries.
両国(りょうこく)の首脳(しゅのう)が会見(かいけん)した。
The leaders of the two countries met.
大統領(だいとうりょう)との会見(かいけん)が実現(じつげん)した。
A meeting with the president was realized.
天皇(てんのう)陛下(へいか)に会見(かいけん)を許(ゆる)された。
They were granted an audience with the Emperor.
