aftershock (following an earthquake)
A smaller earthquake that follows the main shock. Composed of 余 (remaining, leftover) + 震 (quake, tremor). In earthquake-prone Japan, aftershocks are frequently reported in the news and are an important part of daily earthquake awareness.
余震に注意してください。
Please be cautious of aftershocks.
本震の後、何度も余震が続いた。
After the main quake, aftershocks continued many times.
大きな地震から一週間経っても、まだ余震が感じられる。
Even a week after the major earthquake, aftershocks can still be felt.
USAGE:
After a major earthquake in Japan, news broadcasts will regularly report on 余震 activity. The phrase 余震に注意 (be cautious of aftershocks) is a standard warning. The main earthquake is called 本震, and foreshocks are called 前震.
