1.
kun'yomi + on'yomi reading of a kanji compound
A way of reading a two-kanji compound where the first character uses kun'yomi (Japanese reading) and the second uses on'yomi (Chinese-derived reading). Named after the word 湯桶 (hot water pitcher), which is itself read this way.
「夕刊」は湯桶読みの例だ。
"Yuukan" (evening newspaper) is an example of yutou-yomi.
湯桶読みは重箱読みの逆のパターンだ。
Yutou-yomi is the reverse pattern of juubako-yomi.
日本語には湯桶読みの言葉がたくさんあるが、学習者にとっては読み方を覚えるのが難しい。
There are many words with yutou-yomi reading in Japanese, but for learners, memorizing the readings is difficult.
USAGE:
A linguistic term useful for understanding kanji reading patterns. The opposite pattern is 重箱読み (on'yomi + kun'yomi). Common examples of 湯桶読み include:
- 湯桶 (ゆ = kun + とう = on)
- 夕刊 (ゆう = kun + かん = on)
- 雨具 (あま = kun + ぐ = on)
- 見本 (み = kun + ほん = on)
SIMILAR WORDS:
- 重箱読み: on'yomi + kun'yomi reading — the reverse pattern, named after 重箱 (tiered food box)
