A bottle that has been emptied of its contents. Commonly encountered in the context of recycling and waste separation in Japan.
Composed of 空き (empty, vacant) + 瓶 (bottle). Part of a series with 空き缶 (empty can) and 空き箱 (empty box). In Japanese garbage separation systems, 空き瓶 are typically classified as 資源ごみ (recyclable waste) and collected separately. The prefix 空き- is productive: 空き家 (vacant house), 空き地 (vacant lot), 空き室 (vacant room).
