Named after the 今川(いまがわ)(ばし) (Imagawa Bridge) area in Edo, where it is said to have originated. This food has many regional names across Japan: 大判焼(おおばんや)き (Kansai and other regions), 回転焼(かいてんや)き (Kansai), 太鼓焼(たいこや)き (some regions), 御座候(ござそうろう) (brand name popular in Kansai). The most common filling is (つぶ)あん (chunky red bean paste) or こしあん (smooth red bean paste), but modern variations include カスタードクリーム (custard cream) and チョコレート (chocolate).
