Composed of 体 (body) + 外 (outside). The opposite is 体内 (inside the body). Common collocations: 体外受精 (in vitro fertilization / IVF), 体外診断 (in vitro diagnostics), 体外式 (external type). Not to be confused with the homophone 大概 (generally; mostly; enough already). 体外受精 is a widely discussed topic in Japan as the country grapples with declining birth rates — IVF treatment is now partially covered by health insurance.
