one-person company; sole-member corporation; single-owner business entity
A legally incorporated company where a single individual serves as the sole shareholder, director, and often the only employee. Distinct from sole proprietorship in that it is a registered corporate entity with limited liability.
Composed of 一人 (one person) and 会社 (company). Since the 2006 revision of Japan's Companies Act, it became possible to establish a 合同会社 (limited liability company) or 株式会社 (corporation) with just one person, making 一人会社 increasingly common among freelancers and consultants.
