いざ
いざ
interjection
now; come on; here goes
1.
now; come on; here goes
An interjection used when about to begin something decisive, expressing resolve. Also forms the fixed phrase いざという時 (when the time comes; in an emergency).
いざ、行こう。
Come on, let's go.
いざとなれば助けを呼ぶ。
If it comes to it, I'll call for help.
いざという時に備えて、食料を備蓄している。
I stockpile food in preparation for an emergency.
いざ is an interjection expressing resolve at the moment of starting a decisive action — roughly 'now then' or 'here goes.' On its own it can sound slightly dramatic or old-fashioned.
FIXED EXPRESSIONS:
- いざという時: when the time comes; in an emergency
- いざとなれば/いざとなったら: if it comes to it; when push comes to shove
- いざ出発: now, let's set off
USAGE:
The standalone interjection is most common in speeches, narration, or moments of determination. The 時・となれば patterns are everyday and very common.
