2. current account; checking account
A bank account used for day-to-day business payments, typically settled by check and earning no interest.
会社(かいしゃ)の当座(とうざ)預金(よきん)から支払(しはら)った。
I paid from the company's current account.
当座(とうざ)預金(よきん)には利息(りそく)がつかない。
A current account earns no interest.
取引(とりひき)先(さき)への支払(しはら)いは当座(とうざ)預金(よきん)を使(つか)っている。
We use a current account for payments to business partners.

Two related senses. The core idea is the immediate here and now; the banking sense names the account used for everyday, immediate payments.

SENSE 1 — for the time being:
Often used attributively as 当座(とうざ)の (immediate; current) or adverbially.

  • 当座(とうざ)の間(あいだ)に合(あ)わせ: a stopgap; a makeshift measure
  • 当座(とうざ)しのぎ: a temporary fix

SENSE 2 — current account:

  • 当座(とうざ)預金(よきん): a current (checking) account
  • 当座(とうざ)小切手(こぎって): a current-account check
