history
1. Jomon; the Jomon period and culture
The prehistoric era of Japan's hunter-gatherer culture, from about 14,000 to about 300 BCE, named after the cord-marked pattern pressed into its pottery. Mostly used in compounds such as 縄文時代(じょうもんじだい) and 縄文土器(じょうもんどき).
We visited a Jomon-period site.
People in the Jomon period lived by hunting and fishing.
Jomon pottery bears patterns made by rolling cord over the clay.

The name means 'cord pattern' (縄(なわ) 'rope' + 文(もん) 'pattern'). In school history it comes first, followed by the rice-farming Yayoi period (弥生時代(やよいじだい)).
