time-generalculture
1. Christmas Eve
December 24. In Japan, where Christmas is not a religious or family holiday for most people, the evening is above all a night for couples: a romantic dinner, illuminations, and presents.
クリスマスイブに会(あ)おう。
Let's meet on Christmas Eve.
クリスマスイブのレストランはどこも予約(よやく)でいっぱいだ。
On Christmas Eve every restaurant is fully booked.
In Japan, many people spend Christmas Eve with a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Also written クリスマス・イブ or クリスマスイヴ, and often shortened to イブ.

Cultural note

Families with children eat Christmas cake and often fried chicken, but for adults the 24th is a date night, and spending it alone is a stock subject of self-mocking jokes. Christmas Day itself is an ordinary working day, and decorations give way to New Year ones on the 26th.
