Cultural note

The old province was 信濃(しなの), and the area is still often called 信州(しんしゅう), as in 信州(しんしゅう)そば (buckwheat noodles) and 信州(しんしゅう)みそ. Much of the Japanese Alps lies in the prefecture, which makes it a center for skiing and mountain resorts such as 軽井沢(かるいざわ).
