Yosano Akiko (1878–1942)
A tanka poet whose first collection, みだれ髪 (Tangled Hair, 1901), shocked readers with its frank celebration of love and the body. She also wrote the anti-war poem 君死にたまふことなかれ, translated The Tale of Genji into modern Japanese, and argued for women's independence.
Cultural note
