授業(じゅぎょう)中(ちゅう)に携帯(けいたい)が鳴(な)って、先生(せんせい)に注意(ちゅうい)された。
My phone rang during class and the teacher scolded me.
2. to rumble, to growl
For natural sounds like thunder or a stomach growling.
お腹(なか)が鳴(な)った。
My stomach growled.
雷(かみなり)が鳴(な)っている。
Thunder is rumbling.
昼(ひる)ごはんを食(た)べなかったから、お腹(なか)がずっと鳴(な)っている。
I didn't eat lunch, so my stomach has been growling the whole time.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: 鳴(な)らす (transitive, to ring/sound something). Pattern: Xが鳴(な)る (X rings/sounds).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing sound. 鳴(な)っている = 'is ringing.'
