For a sound to be produced by a bell, phone, alarm, or similar device.
電話(でんわ)()っている。
The phone is ringing.
目覚(めざ)まし時計(どけい)()らなかった。

My phone rang during class and the teacher scolded me.
2. to rumble, to growl
For natural sounds like thunder or a stomach growling.
(なか)()った。
My stomach growled.
(かみなり)()っている。
Thunder is rumbling.
I didn't eat lunch, so my stomach has been growling the whole time.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: ()らす (transitive, to ring/sound something). Pattern: Xが()る (X rings/sounds).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing sound. ()っている = 'is ringing.'
