Indicates where something was manufactured.
この車(くるま)は日本製(にほんせい)だ。
This car is made in Japan.
手製(てせい)のケーキを作(つく)った。
I made a homemade cake.
この時計(とけい)は外国製(がいこくせい)だ。
This watch is foreign-made.
2. made of (material)
Indicates the material something is made from.
木製(もくせい)のテーブルを買(か)った。
I bought a wooden table.
革製(かわせい)のかばんは高(たか)い。
Leather bags are expensive.
金属製(きんぞくせい)の棚(たな)を買(か)った。
I bought a metal shelf.

〜製(せい) is a suffix attached to a country, company, or material to indicate what something is made of or where it was manufactured.

ORIGIN (made in/by):

  • 日本製(にほんせい): made in Japan
  • 中国製(ちゅうごくせい): made in China
  • 外国製(がいこくせい): foreign-made
  • 国産(こくさん): domestic product (similar but not a 製(せい) compound)

GRAMMAR:
Typically used as a noun modifier with の: 木製(もくせい)の椅子(いす) (wooden chair). Can also be used as a predicate: この椅子(いす)は木製(もくせい)だ (this chair is wooden).
