Etymology

繰(く)る (to reel, unroll) + 広(ひろ)げる (to spread): the image is of a scroll being unrolled scene by scene.

Usage

Used for a contest, debate or show that goes on for some time with drama: games, battles, election campaigns, performances. It is common in the passive with the event as subject: 熱戦(ねっせん)が繰(く)り広(ひろ)げられた. It is not used for spreading out a physical object (for that, 広(ひろ)げる).
