A rack or basket placed next to the kitchen sink where washed dishes are placed to drip dry. A standard item in Japanese kitchens.
洗った皿を水切りかごに置く。
Put the washed plates on the dish drainer.
水切りかごがいっぱいになった。
The dish drainer is full.
キッチンが狭いので、水切りかごの代わりに水切りマットを使っている。
Since the kitchen is small, I use a drying mat instead of a dish drainer.
水切り (draining water) + かご (basket). In Japanese kitchens, many people air-dry dishes rather than towel-drying them.
Alternatives to the traditional basket:
- 水切りマット — absorbent drying mat
- 水切りラック — metal drying rack
- 水切りトレー — drying tray
Like the 三角コーナー, some minimalist households choose not to use a 水切りかご to save counter space.
