Forms

ひき (轢(ひ)き, from 轢(ひ)く "to run over") + 逃(に)げ (from 逃(に)げる "to flee"). Literally "run over and flee."

Legal context

ひき逃(に)げ is a serious crime in Japan. Penalties are more severe than for accidents where the driver remains at the scene. It is also called 救護(きゅうご)義務(ぎむ)違反(いはん) (failure to fulfill the duty to assist).
