そうそう is a casual conversational interjection with two main functions.

FUNCTION 1 — AGREEMENT:

Enthusiastically confirms what someone just said, stronger than a single そう. Often used while nodding along in conversation.

  • Example: 「あの(みせ)おいしいよね」「そうそう!」

FUNCTION 2 — RECOLLECTION:

Introduces something the speaker just remembered, similar to "oh right" or "that reminds me."

  • Example: そうそう、()(わす)れてたけど… (Oh right, I forgot to mention…)

SIMILAR EXPRESSIONS:

  • そうだね: agreement (neutral)
  • そうですね: agreement (polite)
  • そういえば: speaking of which, come to think of it
  • あ、そうだ: oh, that's right (sudden recollection)

REGISTER:
Casual/informal. The repetition of そう adds emphasis and friendliness. In polite or formal conversation, そうですね is preferred. Very common in spoken Japanese but rarely appears in formal writing.
